Aboard a Thai train in Hat Yai
A security guard is seen standing in front the train from Hat Yai to Sungai Kolok December 30, 2012.. Insurgency and terrorism movements in Thailand’s Deep South – a predominantly Muslim area populated by a majority of Malay Thais - has plunged the entire region into a spiral of violence. Tourism of course came to a halt a long time ago, except for travelers in transfer from the Deep South into Malaysia. Trains have been regularly attacked over the last five years with tracks being the target of bombs. The last one was found in late November on the tracks linking the bordering city Sungei Kolok to Yala. Photo by Samsul Said.
